About the city...

The city of Barcelos is located in the north of Portugal specifically in the district of Braga and is the city with the most advice in the country (62). It is 61.9 km from Porto and 372 km from Lisbon (capital of Portugal).

Barcelos is known for many things such as the legend of the rooster of barcelos and pottery (roosters and other objects made of clay).

The legend of Barcelos Rooster

The rooster legend of Barcelos consists of a story consequence in which only two stories will be available on this page. The first story was from a family of pilgrims, many years ago, who stayed at an inn in Barcelos and carried a sack full of farnel. The innkeeper (who was a very greedy person) called the police accusing the family of theft. Police arrived at the scene and told their family they were sentenced to death. The head of this family stated that "It is as true that I am innocent as this rooster crows!" After that sentence, the rooster, which was dead, sang. The second story took place during a banquet organized by a wealthy owner of Barcelos who stole a portion of the silver banquet and one of the guests was charged with theft, with evidence and was also tried in court. The guest was going to be arrested but first the judge authorized the alleged culprit to speak his last words in which the guest replied, "If I am innocent, the rooster will sing!" Once again the rooster that was dead sang and the guest was set free.

The most touristic places to visit in Barcelos are: the castle of Barcelos, the church of Senhor da Cruz, the garden of Barrocas, the largest fair field in the country, the “Old” garden, the garden of Pontevedra, among others.

Last but not least, there is the famous feast of the cross which, together with the Lord of the Cross church, has a legend.

The Legend of the Miracle of the Crosses

The legend of the miracle of the crosses happened in the year 1504, when a shoemaker named João Pires was walking to his house after the work was finished and in front of his house he had a strange vision (apparition). A black cross appeared on the floor without any human work. It is said that it was God who made that cross to assert that whatever happens in life, God would always be there to support it. After a few years, this event was continuous, but with a difference for the first time - the first time happened on December 20th and in the following years it was in early May. The place where the black cross was located today is the fair ground in Barcelos. A fountain was made in the center of the field by this miracle.

Differences between Ruma and Barcelos

The differences between these two cities, apart from those caused by the human being (food, lifestyle, etc.), there are physical differences such as the organization of the city, the number of shops, cafes, restaurants, among others. In Barcelos you can have more places of this type than Ruma and parking spaces that also exist more in Barcelos than in Ruma. Regarding the organization of the city, I think the most organized city is Ruma yet as with everything, there are pros and cons that are:

    Pros:
  • it is less difficult to get lost in the city;
  • it is easier to locate somewhere in the city;
    Cons:
  • it is not possible to have as many cafes, supermarkets, among otherd as Barcelos;
  • there can be no more parking spaces than Barcelos;
  • moving from one place to another is worse;
